Some days you meet one of these. At Coiba, you can meet all seven.

Most wildlife destinations give you one headline animal to chase. Coiba National Park gives you a whole cast — and you can meet most of them between breakfast and sunset on a single day trip. This is the kind of place where "I swam with a sea turtle" is just the third-best thing that happened before lunch. Here are seven bucket-list encounters waiting in these waters.

1. Swimming beside a sea turtle

For most people, this is the moment. You're floating over the reef when a green or hawksbill turtle rises from below, wings its way past you and carries on grazing, completely unbothered. They're common in Coiba's shallows and often let snorkelers drift alongside for minutes. It never gets old — not even for us. Read more about swimming with turtles in Coiba.

2. Meeting a reef shark (the friendly kind)

Say "shark" and people picture teeth. The reality in Coiba is a white-tip reef shark resting calmly on the sand or cruising the reef edge — shy, harmless to snorkelers and genuinely thrilling to see in the wild. For many guests it's the moment they realize sharks are something to protect, not fear. Here's the full story on swimming with sharks in Coiba.

3. Dolphins riding the bow

The boat ride out is part of the show. Pods of dolphins regularly appear alongside, surfing the bow wave and leaping clear of the water while everyone scrambles for their cameras. It's wild, spontaneous and happens on a good share of our crossings — nature's welcome committee on the way to the park.

4. An eagle ray or manta gliding past

Few things in the ocean are as graceful as a ray in open water. In Coiba you might spot a spotted eagle ray flying along the drop-off or, if you're lucky, a manta cruising through the blue. They appear when you least expect them, and the sight of those "wings" beating slowly through the water stays with you for years.

5. Swimming inside a swirling school of fish

With over 760 species of fish, Coiba's reefs erupt with colour and movement. Drift into a shimmering school of jacks or snappers and they part around you, close behind, and reform — a completely immersive, slightly surreal feeling of being inside the reef rather than looking at it. This is the everyday magic of Coiba, on every single stop.

6. Hearing (or seeing) a humpback whale

Between July and October, humpback whales gather in these waters to breed and raise their calves, and the crossing doubles as a whale watch. You might see a breach in the distance, a tail slipping under the surface — or, unforgettably, hear their song carrying through the water while you snorkel. Learn more in our whale watching guide.

7. Spotting a scarlet macaw over the island

Coiba's magic isn't only underwater. The park is one of the last strongholds in Panama for the scarlet macaw, and flashes of red, blue and gold cross the sky above the island's forest. Add monkeys, iguanas, crocodiles and a wealth of seabirds, and Coiba becomes a full wildlife world — above and below the surface. See more in our Coiba birdwatching guide.
