Granito de Oro Is Closed: What Happened, and Where You'll Snorkel Instead

Coiba's postcard islet is under a full closure ordered by Panama's environment authorities so its damaged reefs can recover. Here's the honest story — and why your snorkeling day in Coiba is still spectacular.

If you've been researching Coiba, you've seen the photos: a speck of white sand, a few palms and turquoise water — Granito de Oro, the "little grain of gold". The photos are real. And so is this: the islet is currently closed to all visitors. Panama's environment ministry (MiAmbiente) ordered the closure so the coral around it can recover from years of damage, and the closure remains in force in 2026. As the local crew, we'd rather tell you the truth than sell you a postcard — here's what happened, whether it will reopen, and where you'll actually snorkel.

What is Granito de Oro?

Granito de Oro is a tiny islet off the northeastern coast of Coiba, inside Coiba National Park. For years it was the park's most famous stop — nicknamed the "aquarium of Coiba" because its rocks and coral heads concentrated turtles, reef sharks and clouds of tropical fish within a few fin-kicks of a white-sand beach. That fame is exactly what ended up hurting it.

Why is it closed?

Years of heavy visitor pressure took a real toll on the coral around the islet. The park's environmental authorities responded by closing Granito de Oro completely, so the reefs and marine ecosystems can recover naturally, without boats, anchors and hundreds of fins a day. The closure has been maintained ever since and remains in force in 2026, alongside a wider rehabilitation program in the national park. As people who live from these waters, we support it fully: no photo stop is worth a dead reef.

What this means for your tour

Simple: no landing and no snorkeling at Granito de Oro — for anyone. Serious operators respect the closure, and we'd encourage you to be wary of anyone who promises you that stop. The good news: the park is enormous, and your day still includes 3 snorkel stops at the authorized reefs and islets that are open — chosen by our guides for the day's best visibility and conditions.

Will it reopen?

There's no official reopening date. That decision belongs to the park authorities and depends on how well the reefs recover — coral heals on its own clock, not on a tourist season's. When Granito de Oro officially reopens, we'll be the first to celebrate (loudly, from our boats). Until then, the best thing every traveler can do is respect the closure and let the little grain of gold heal.

Where you'll snorkel instead

Coiba National Park protects dozens of reefs and islets, and the stars of the show never left: green and hawksbill turtles, white-tip reef sharks, rays and huge schools of tropical fish live throughout the park, not just at one islet. Our full-day tour (from $70 with gear, guide and lunch) visits the open sites at their best moment of the day. Meet the full cast in our Coiba marine life guide.

The lesson of the little golden grain

Granito de Oro's closure is proof that the rules exist for a reason. Every visitor can help keep the rest of the park open and alive: wear reef-safe sunscreen (better yet, a rash guard), never touch or stand on coral, keep a respectful distance from wildlife and take everything back to the boat. That's how the other reefs stay golden — and how Granito de Oro comes back stronger.
