Coiba wildlife calendar: what you'll actually see, month by month

"When is the best time?" depends entirely on what you're hoping for. Coiba doesn't have a dead season — the park is a protected marine reserve and the reef works all year — but the water clarity, the sea state and which large animals are passing through do change. This is what we see from the boat, month by month.

Year-round, every month

Sea turtles are the constant — green and hawksbill turtles show up on the large majority of our tours in every month. So do whitetip reef sharks resting under coral, schooling jacks and snappers, pufferfish, moray eels and the 760+ fish species the park is known for. If turtles and reef life are your goal, no month is a bad month.

December to April — the clearest water

This is dry season. Calmer crossings, the best visibility of the year, and reliable sunshine. It's peak tourist season in Panama, so boats book up further ahead. If you want the postcard version of Coiba — clear blue, flat sea, easy first-timer conditions — this is your window. It's also when a smaller northern population of humpbacks passes Panama, though sightings on our route are much less predictable than in the southern season.

July to October — whale season

The big one. Humpback whales that fed in Antarctic waters arrive to breed, and the crossing to Coiba runs straight through their nursery. This is when we run dedicated whale tours, with two options: whales only, or whales plus a full Coiba snorkel day. Afternoon rain is normal in these months and doesn't cancel anything; mornings are usually calm, which is why we leave at 8:30. The migration story is worth reading before you come.

May, June and November — the quiet months

Green season shoulder months. Fewer boats, fewer people at the snorkel stops, and green landscapes on the drive in. Visibility is more variable and you should expect afternoon showers, but plenty of days are excellent and you'll often have a reef more or less to yourself. If you value space over guaranteed conditions, these are underrated.

What nobody can promise

Whale sharks pass through, mostly in the dry season, but they are genuinely rare and no honest operator will guarantee them. The same goes for manta rays and dolphins — common enough to mention, not common enough to promise. Any operator who guarantees a specific animal on a specific day is selling you something they can't deliver. We tell you the odds and let the ocean decide.

So when should you come?

Want the calmest, clearest water and are travelling with nervous swimmers or kids? December to April. Want whales? July to October, no substitute. Want the park to yourself and don't mind a rain jacket? May, June or November.
