Shared or private Coiba tour? How to choose the right day for you

Both visit the same reefs with the same certified crew. What changes is who’s on the boat, who sets the pace and how the price works.

It’s one of the first questions people ask before booking: is the private boat worth it, or is the shared tour enough? Both days visit the same national park, the same snorkel sites and the same beach, with the same guides and captains. The difference is everything around that — who shares the boat with you, how flexible the day is and how the cost is split. Here’s how we’d decide if we were in your place.

What’s the same on both tours

Every tour leaves Santa Catalina in the morning and spends the whole day in Coiba National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage marine reserve. On both you get the boat crossing, a certified local guide, snorkel gear and life vests, lunch and beach time at Isla Ranchería. Park entry is paid per person on top of the tour price, and on both the captain has the final word on sea conditions. A private boat doesn’t buy different reefs or bigger animals: Coiba’s wildlife is the same for everyone.

The shared tour: the best value per person

On the shared tour (our group tour) you join other travelers on our boat, never more than ten people. The route is our classic one: three snorkel stops at different islands inside the park, lunch at the park’s visitor center and the beach at Isla Ranchería, with the return to Santa Catalina around 4 pm. You pay per person, which makes it the most economical way to see Coiba if you are one, two or three travelers — and you often meet good company on board. Here’s the full shared tour.

The private boat: your group, your pace

A private tour puts only your group on the boat. The price is flat per boat, set by group size for up to ten people, and park entry is added per person. In exchange the day bends around you, within park rules and sea conditions: more time with the turtles, a longer stop on the beach, timing planned around the light for photographers or, from July to October, a day built around humpback whales. Families with small children like it because the day follows naps and snacks instead of a group schedule.

How the numbers work for your group

Because the private price is per boat and the shared price is per person, the right choice depends on how many of you there are. For a couple, a private boat costs several times what two seats on the shared tour cost: worth it for a special occasion, not for the budget. For a group of nine or ten, the private price per person is about the same as a seat on the shared tour, so the private day is the obvious choice. With five to eight people it’s a judgment call — you pay more per person for complete flexibility. Current prices are always on our private tour and Coiba tour pages.

Which one we’d choose

Traveling alone or as a couple and want the classic Coiba day at the best price? Take the shared tour. A big family, a group of friends, a celebration, or photos that need patience at every stop? Take a private boat. Somewhere in between? Send us your dates and group size on WhatsApp and we’ll tell you honestly what makes sense for that week — including what the sea usually looks like.
