Coiba Prison was founded in 1919, this island was the place for Panama’s most dangerous criminals. Prisoners were scattered around the island in 30 makeshift camps. The prisoners sent to Coiba during the dictatorship of Omar Torrijos and Manuel Antonio Noriega were known as “Los Desaparecidos”. This is mainly due to the prisoners being buried in unmarked graves.
